History:

The Skating Club of Amherst was started in 1968 by a group of sixty-five Amherst College and community skaters. Until 1993, the club skated a five-month winter season out of Amherst College's Orr Rink. In February of 1993 the University of Massachusetts opened the Mullins Center Ice Rink. This enabled the SC of Amherst to become an active year-round skating club utilizing both college's facilities. Membership has now grown to nearly 300 skaters with skaters coming from many local communities as well as from Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut. A majority of members remain recreational skaters. However, since the availability of year-round ice sessions, an ever increasing number of skaters have become active competitors representing the SC of Amherst at competitions throughout the New England area. The club offers ice sessions in freestyle and moves-in-the-field. The club's Learn-to-Skate program offers a group lesson weekly in the basic skills of figure skating to skaters age 4 through adult. Private instruction is also available. The Skating Club of Amherst is a private, non-profit organization managed by dedicated adult volunteers. The club is a member of the New England Interclub Council and the United States Figure Skating Association.
