History:

The Penfield Company began in the 1880's as a general mercantile company in Lincoln County, NM, the home of Billy the Kid. The store served as a trade center with people coming from all parts of the state to trade in everything from farm supplies to Indian rugs.

The original store has since been made into a state museum. The John M. Penfield mentioned in the sign shown above is the grandfather of the current owner. The Penfield tradition continues since 1975 at their store in Albuquerque's historic Old Town.
