The Eastern Shore is a peninsula located between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It shares a land border with Maryland, but is separated from the rest of Virginia by the Chesapeake Bay. The Shore was inhabited for thousands of years by native people who left rhcir mark in the manv names that todav identify our towns and bays:Onancock, Pungotcaguc. Chincoteaguc and Assawoman. In the first decades of die 17th century, English and African settlers came to till the rich soils and enjoy the tair climate Today then-descendants still till the soil and enjoy the fair climate.

Ihe Hasten* Shore of Virqmia Historical Society was incorporated in 1957 to preserve the peninsula's singular historical heritage. Soon after it's founding the Society purchased Ker Place to serve as its headquarters and an historic house museum. This grand Fcdcr.il house admired by generations and preserved by its owners, ts notable for the architectural details that its builder skill Hilly constructed. Today the house serves as the Center for Eastern Shore History. It is a house museum and an archive, library, archaeological laboratory, and an educational institution.
