Central Sierra Historical Society

Mission:

The mission is to enrich the cultural and educational experiences of visitors to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, by deepening their understanding of the human and natural history of this area. CSHS hopes to inspire future generations by bringing to life the challenges and achievements of the people who lived here.

Goal:

To construct and operate a first-class museum and learning center near Shaver Lake that will preserve the heritage of the Central Sierra. CSHS will provide educational programs and activities to the public, it will preserve and protect historical artifacts, and it will work in partnership with other organizations to further the study of the history of this area.

About the Museum:

The Central Sierra Historical Society and Museum, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) public benefit corporation with a membership of over 500 individuals, businesses, and organizations. CSHS was founded in 1991, but its roots date back to the early 1980's, when a group of individuals in the central Sierra recognized the need for an organized effort to preserve the fast-disappearing history of the area.

This grassroots endeavor was the catalyst for the Central Sierra Historical Society, which identified as part of its mission the creation of a regional history museum. CSHS launched the Museum of the Central Sierra with a major media event in 1998.

In addition to museum building, CSHS is actively preserving local historical treasures, such as the Pine Logging Camp and a 1912 caboose from the SJ&E Railroad and collecting the oral histories of area pioneers. The "Museum Without Walls" series of lectures, field trips, and social events have helped to build educational programs that will be further expanded when the new museum is ready to welcome visitors. A Museum Store at CSHS headquarters in Shaver Lake provides adults' and childrens' books on California history, Native American culture, pioneer lives, natural history, wildlife, environmental issues facing the West, and recreational activities in the Sierra.

The Internal Revenue Service has issued the Society a final determination letter of our foundation status under section 509(a) of the Code. The IRS has determined that we are a publicly supported organization described in section 509(a) (1) and 170 (b)(1)(a)(vi). Accordingly, we are treated as a publicly supported organization and not as a private foundation. Donors and contributors may rely on this determination unless the IRS publishes notice to the contrary. Donors may deduct contributions to the Society as provided in section 170 of the code.
