History of the Atrium Gallery at One Capitol Hill

The Atrium Gallery was developed by RISCA to exhibit the work of Rhode Island artists in the State Capitol Complex. It hosts exhibits on a rotating basis, in partnership with community artists and art organizations from across the state.  The Atrium also showcases artwork from a variety of diverse groups from Africa, Asia, Latin America, & the Native American community among others.

A ‘gala’ reception night is held each month to recognize the artists whose works are on display for that month. These exhibits and receptions have become an important and anticipated event for everyone, as they provide a wonderful venue for a greater appreciation of the artistic talent from various communities

Since 2009, RISCA has added several new exhibits to the existing Latin American and Black Art shows, including the First Annual State Asian Art Exhibit, the First Annual State Diversity Art Exhibit, The First Annual Inter-Tribal Native American Art Exhibit and the First Annual State Youth Art Exhibit, which featured the work of students from New Urban Arts, RISD Project Open Door & As220 Youth Studio.  .

Besides the new diversity exhibits, several other programs were created such as

The New Visions/New Curator Series, The International Joomchi and Beyond Art exhibit, The International Artist and Cultural Exchange Program and the Atrium Gallery Traveling Exhibits.

We have formed fruitful and productive partnerships during these years with the Rhode Island Department of Administration, Human Resources Outreach & Diversity (HROD) , The Governor’s Office, As220, RISD Project Open Door, VSA The Laotian Community Center, The Tomaquag Museum, Courthouse Center for the Arts, & the Warwick Art Museum,& the Attleboro Art Museum  in bringing the Atrium Gallery traveling exhibits to other cities in Rhode Island and New England. We want to continue to develop partnerships with local, regional & national organizations and connect to new audiences throughout the State and the Region.
